Social Networking
I believe that social networking is entirely innovative and an exciting field because it is fairly new. There is so much about it to be discovered which is why there is a lot of "trial and error" that comes with the use of social networking sites. One site prominently used is Facebook. Almost all of us use it, typically in the 20-years and older demographic since a lot of younger people consider it outdated. The complex thing about Facebook is that people long to be private while being public which is a bit contradictory. We tend to put information out there that we want people to see but not everyone to see which is why Facebook has many complicates privacy and security settings. In the article by Marc Perry, he states that students care more about the privacy of their posts. He accredits this to Facebook displaying prompts as to when a new security update has been added making young people aware of it, causing them to pay more attention to their settings. There are many factors that affect the way students interact on Facebook. We are actively censoring and hiding our content because we know that employers are scouting us for information. A simple solution would be to not post content that we are wary of others finding, but we still continue to do it regardless. In an NPR radio segment, it was mentioned that social media has increased job recruiting. It is easy for employers to get a sense of who they're hiring. the "dark side" of social is that people can mask their true identities which can cause confusion because social gives them the platform to create and manipulate themselves.
Social networking sites can be a little tricky to navigate especially when we want our privacy, but we can’t help sharing our lives online. I doubt people hardly ever read the privacy laws on any site before they click accept.
